Remote desktop with a graphics card — from €15.48/mo

Work over RDP where an ordinary VPS crawls: the graphics are drawn by a real NVIDIA. 5-hour test period before payment

A desktop that does not crawl on graphics

An ordinary virtual server draws its interface with the CPU: Windows hands applications its built-in software renderer, so anything with 3D in it stutters or does not start at all. On our desktop the graphics are computed by a share of an NVIDIA Tesla P4 with a full driver, and the Windows desktop itself goes through the card as well. Measured on two identical machines: browser graphics (WebGL) gave 60 fps against 33, a 3D OpenGL scene 60 fps against 5, and the CPU was busy 9% instead of 79%. Direct3D applications simply do not start on the machine without a card. It suits CAD and 3D viewers, graphics editors, browsers with heavy dashboards and maps, and demos for clients. The machine runs on AMD EPYC 7663 with NVMe, Windows over RDP; a plan plus GPU bundle starts at €15.48/mo, with a 5-hour test period before payment.

The card is the primary display

In our image the graphics card is already the primary display of the system: windows are drawn on it and the customer configures nothing.

2

Real 3D instead of a stub

OpenGL and Direct3D run on hardware. Without a card a Direct3D application reports Unknown GPU and refuses to start.

3

The CPU stays free

Same scene: 9% load instead of 79%. The cores stay with your application rather than with drawing the interface.

How to get started

1

Pick a bundle

One workstation with a viewer fits 1 GB of video memory; for heavy scenes and several windows take 2 GB.

2

Install Windows

You pick the image yourself and the NVIDIA driver is already in it. You connect over RDP from a laptop, a tablet or a low-powered PC.

3

Check it in 5 hours

The machine runs before payment: install your own software and see how it behaves under real load.

Who it suits and who it does not

Who it suits and who it does not

It suits: viewers and model review in AutoCAD, SolidWorks and SketchUp, work in graphics editors, browsers with WebGL and maps, demonstrating interfaces to clients, Android emulators, screen recording and video calls.

It does not suit: modern games and anything needing a high frame rate — the card profile has a hard ceiling of 60 frames per second, 1–2 GB of video memory and Pascal without ray tracing. A share of the card is also too small for training neural networks.

If there are no graphics in your work at all — mail, documents, a terminal — you do not need a card: an ordinary Windows VPS is cheaper and will do the job just as well.

On a normal VPS the CPU computes the graphics: 3D stutters and Direct3D applications do not start. With a card the same scene gives 60 fps instead of 5 and uses 9% of the CPU instead of 79%.

No. The NVIDIA driver is already installed in the image and the card is set as the primary display — windows are drawn on it as soon as the system is installed.

One workstation with a viewer is covered by 1 GB (a bundle from €15.48/mo). Heavy scenes, several windows or an emulator need 2 GB, a bundle from €25.98/mo.

Up to 60: the card profile has a hardware limiter and will not go higher. In the test the card was only 31% loaded at that point, so the headroom goes to neighbouring machines.

Yes, you connect over RDP from any device. All the computing happens on the server; the client only needs a screen and a network.

One active session by default. Several users need Microsoft Remote Desktop licences and more memory — describe the task and we will size a configuration.

Not for modern ones: 1–2 GB of video memory, no ray tracing, a 60 fps ceiling and the picture travelling over the network. Older and lightweight games, plus mobile games in an emulator, are fine.

Yes, 5 hours. The machine is handed over immediately: install your software and check the responsiveness on real files before you pay.
