What VPS Do You Need for a Game Server

Work out the memory your modpack and player count need — then measure the tick rate on your own game during the 5-hour test period, before you pay

Choosing a build for a game server

A game server needs two things above all: memory for the build and a high clock speed per core. The main loop of most games is single-threaded, so extra vCPU do not raise the tick rate — they let you run several servers on one machine. Practical benchmarks: vanilla Minecraft for 20 players needs 6 GB of RAM, modpacks and CS2 need 8 GB, Rust, ARK and DayZ need 16 GB or more. Below are builds per game plus answers about ports, mods and protection. Once you have chosen, order a VPS for a game server.

Benchmarks based on the requirements of popular builds; actual consumption depends on the mods, the map size and the number of players. Prices are for monthly billing from our price list — 10 % lower for six months, 18 % lower for a year.

1

Memory matters more than cores

Mods and the map live in RAM: a vanilla build fits into 6 GB, a modpack with 100+ mods needs 16 GB or more.

2

Clock speed beats vCPU count

The main game loop is single-threaded, so the tick rate rides on one core's clock speed. Extra vCPU are for running several servers on one machine.

3

Your own IP and your own rules

A dedicated IPv4, your own ports in the firewall, any mods and plugins — you administer the server, not a hosting panel.

How to match a server to your game

Three steps — from the build's requirements to a tick rate you have measured.

1

Take the build's requirements

Look up the recommended memory for your game and modpack and add 1–2 GB for the operating system.

2

Estimate the player count

Every 10 players above the base count add load on memory and network — take a plan with headroom for peak hours.

3

Measure the response in the test period

The VPS is provisioned in test mode for 5 hours: deploy the build, join with friends and check the tick rate and ping before you pay.

Plans, OS images and the ordering procedure are gathered on the VPS for game servers page, which also describes how the server is deployed through SteamCMD.

If you already know the game, start from its own page: Minecraft, Rust, ARK or Valheim.

A vanilla server for 20 players runs on 6 GB (Standard 2, €6.99/mo). A modpack with 100+ mods needs 16 GB or more — that is Power 1 at €17.99.

Clock speed: the main process of most game servers is single-threaded and lives on one core. Extra vCPU matter when you run several servers on the same machine.

Count by the memory of the build rather than by player numbers: 6 GB covers roughly 20 people on vanilla, 16 GB a modded server with 30–40 online. The test period gives you the exact figure.

From 16 GB of RAM and 10 vCPU (Power 1, €17.99/mo): these games keep a large map and the whole world state in memory. For a big player count take Power 3 with 24 GB.

The distance to the data centre and the route your players' ISPs take. Our servers stand in European data centres; the actual ping is easiest to measure during the 5-hour test period before payment.

It is not included in the plan: game projects are attacked in very different ways, so protection is matched separately to the server and the budget as a paid option. Write to us and we will propose one.

You do, in the control panel, in a couple of clicks — automatic backups are not part of the plan. Many admins also keep a copy of the world on their own machine.
