A multi-domain wildcard is the widest coverage available: the certificate holds several domains, each of them together with all of its subdomains — entries such as *.example.com and *.example.lv. Two or three domains come included, further addresses are bought as extra items, usually up to 100 per certificate. The format pays off when you have at least two domains and each has its own shop., api. and mail.; for a single domain with subdomains a plain wildcard is several times cheaper. - Adding a domain means a reissue and a reinstall on every server that carries the certificate.
- All domains are public: the list is visible inside the certificate and in the transparency logs.
- One key for everything. If the certificate sits on a dozen machines, guard the private key as strictly as your passwords.
